A bird's eye view of Davis

Rarely do I post twice in one day, but today I was up on the William J. Chatlos-Gordon C. Davis Memorial building's roof getting some photos of the roof. As I was up there I decided to get some good pictures of the campus. Here is a nice one showing the parking lot and the Alice E. Chatlos Library.
Here is a picture of the John R. Clement's Hall that houses the Post Office. Off in the distant is Patterson Hall. The space where the sign is located is the future site of the Ministry Center. That ground housed the Old Administration Building and King Hall.

The view from Vestal looked different years ago

The photo that I found in the Old Administration building before it was torn down is a great image of what it looked like back in the 1920s from Vestal, NY looking across the Susquehanna. The field that this picture was taken from now has buildings and roads. I believe the location is around where the Press and Sun offices are now. You can see the tents of PBTS from the Summer Conferences. The landscapes change over time, but Jesus never changes. The look of the campus changes, but the fact that Davis College still remains focused on Jesus Christ is what is important. Still it is good to look back on the photos of yesteryear to see what life was like for the early graduates of PBTS.

1925 view of the campus

Here is a picture, from I believe, the 1925 Theologue. The quality of scan is not the greatest since the book quality was not that great. The image was taken after 1923 as you can note the School Bell resides on the top of the Lecture hall wing, which was given by the class of the 1923. Also in the picture is King Hall and the Old Administration Building. The original picture, or one of the originals resides in the Alice E. Chatlos library on Davis, but it quite large to be scanned by my little scanner. The Library is located around the same area where this photo was taken some 40 plus years before it was built.

Down with the Old Administration Building...One Year Later

On Thursday, April 27, 2006 the Old Administration Building was standing for its final day. The Next day it would be torn down just like the Old Jail House on that day. I went into the Old Administration Building for my final time collecting a few things and snapping a few last photos before it would be torn down.
On Friday, April 28, 2007 (one year ago today) Davis College had a special chapel in which the sign of the Ministry Center was unveiled. After that the school went out to have a prayer of dedication by Dr. Parker. Followed by stones flying through windows and sludge hammers on the walls. Then the large backhoe came and took down the Old Administration Building bring it to rubble.

Down with the Old Jail...One Year Later

Today (Friday, April 27, 2007) marks the one year anniversary of the tearing down of the Old Jail House. It was a Thursday afternoon that the large backhoe came onto the campus and began tearing down the Old Jail. The next day it would the throwing of rocks through the Old Administration Building before that would be torn down.

Looking back...looking forward...nearly a year later

I have been walking around campus looking at the sights that I have seen many times before and I then I thought about the Old Jail and the Old Administration Building. In a few months it will have been a year since the Old Administration Building and Old Jail were torn down on our campus. I had enjoyed going in the Old Administration Building on many occasions. To know that John A. Davis conducted the school for years within those walls. In those walls were tears and laughs prayers and protests. Memories galore and then I found my pictures of that event and began to reminiscence over the event. I also watched the video I recorded of the events. Over one hour of destruction. I posted some pictures that I took of the event back in April and put them on my PNG blog. Then I moved them over here also for all to enjoy. They are found at the following links below:

I decided to upload some other pictures of that day for your viewing pleasure to see this historic building be torn down as we at Davis College move on.

Dr. Parker’s prayer of dedication April 28, 2006

The Following is Dr. Parker’s prayer of dedication at the destruction of the Old Administration Building Friday, April 28, 2006. I typed this up from the recording I made on the video. Enjoy. We are moving forward at Davis College!

One story about this building. Short one. When I was a student, this is where we paid our bills. [Cheers and Yells] It cost me 15 dollars a week: Room, board and tuition. [Laughs]

All right let’s pray! Gracious God thank You for the beauty of the day. Thank You Father for Your approval upon this project as Dr. Miller has shared with us. And thank You for the support of so many in giving, and developing plans, considering lots of different options, and overall Father just putting together the kind of building that will serve the college well, but ultimately Lord will serve You well, and serve the kingdom extremely well. And so we are grateful for the progress, we are grateful for this day, and we are thankful that You are working, You are blessing, You are leading in the development of this campus. Father we do want to pray for these requests and applications that are before some donors and some foundations. And we pray that You will go before each application and work in the hearts of men and women who make decisions about these matters. And we would ask Lord that they might give their approval for the requests that we might have the funds to complete the projects here on this campus. And so Lord we dedicate this occasion to You. And we just recognize it as a token of Your leading in the campus and of Your work on the campus and an indication of greater things to come. And Lord we look forward to the day when we can stand here and dedicate a brand new building for Your honor and for Your glory to be used in the advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And so as this occasion takes place today give Your blessing as we meet together right here and witness this demolition and we ask for Your blessing in Jesus’ name. Amen [Amen.]

Today the Old Adminstration Building that was built back in 1911 was taken down to make way for the Ministry Center. I filmed the 1 1/2 hour event which was amazing to watch. I was also interviewed and will be on Binghamton 12 or 2 for Cable tonight sometime.

Marching Onward and Upward into the Future of Davis College

The following is an article I wrote after the destruction of the two buildings on our campus in April of 2006. Enjoy.

Marching Onward and Upward into the Future of Davis College

By Corey J. Adams

Class of 2007

We must Build on Something. That is common sense. We cannot build on air; we all know that we must build on some foundation. It is true that at times all build what they call “air castles,” but they do not amount to anything. So then, if all are building and must build on some foundation how very important it is to know what we are building.

~From Dr. John A. Davis’ Sermon The Two Foundations

We are living in historic times here at Davis College. We are building on the wonderful hope that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will continue to bless this institute as He has for the past 106 years. We are growing to be able to train the next generation for Christian ministries across the street and around the world. When our founder Dr. John Adelbert Davis founded this school at the turn of the 20th century, with the gift of one dollar from a poor washwoman, I can only imagine the vision he must filled his mind.

Today, the vision of Dr. Davis is embodied in our President George Miller the third and his administration. We are building on the legacy of Dr. Davis and his heart for his Lord and God. As in 1911, after the acquisition of the grounds of the bankrupt White City Amusement Park, these grounds went through many changes to transform it into an excellent training center for men and women of God.

As the grounds began to show their age in the late 1950s plans were hatched by President Gordon Carr Davis (son of Dr. John A. Davis) to once again change the campus into its present look. Now, 50 years later almost to the day that Patterson Dorm was beginning to be planned; the campus of Davis College is once again changing as we are moving onward and upward with vision of Dr. Davis.

Through the leadership of Dr. Miller and his team of professors and staff, the College is in a new and wonderful phase of building on the foundation started so long ago. Yet, sometimes when building for the future it means removing a piece of the past. Just like in our Christian life, we must put off the old self to put on Christ as Paul writes in many of his epistles. We take off the old self not just because of sin, but because God has something better. In taking down the Old Jail House (a symbol of the Old White City days) and the Old Administration building, we are also putting on the future of Davis College, embodied in the Ministry Center.

As Dr. Davis said in his sermon The Two Foundations, “if all are building and must build on some foundation how very important it is to know what we are building.” Here at Davis College we know what we are building and the reason why. We have a clear vision of continuing to serve the Church of Christ for His glory and His honor, for it is all about Him.

Will you not join Davis College as they train this generation of Christian workers? Jesus Christ is alive here at Davis College as we “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2.14b). Millions are dying in this world without Christ, be part of the training of beautiful feet “of those who preach the Gospel of Peace.” Be one of the cornerstones of future of Davis College as history is being written, and the results will be realized only in eternity.
